Historical Records

Genealogy Records from the Hamilton Library, University of Hawaii at Manoa

Housed in the Hawaiian Collection of the Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii at Mano, these documents consist of research work for a sociological study, conducted during 1934 -1935, by an unknown scholar on intermarriage between Hawaiians and Chinese. The files include transcripts of interviews, genealogy data sheets, and summaries of family histories for various members of the following families:  Tong, Aluli, Nawahi, Cash, Kimione, Kai, Akamu, Like, Freeman, Baker. Most of the interviews consist of the interviewee telling the story of the history of their family (parents, grandparents) and biographical information about themselves and their immediate families. Also included here are the analyses and conclusions about Chinese-Hawaiian intermarriages based on the data collected on the Tong family.

“The Chinese-Hawaiian Family”, by Doris M. Lorden, published in American Journal of Sociology, Jan. 1935. Lorden does not cite any family members by name, however, she does cite a couple of quotations as taken “From a life-history document in the files of the Dept. of Sociology, University of Hawaii.” It is not known whether she is the person who did the research on the Tong family, however.
